"Feeding Vancouver's hungry... both spiritual and physical food."

HISTORY

The Gospel Mission or 'Pigeon Mission' as it is known by street people, is in many ways an old fashion mission.

Built in the 1890’s, the building is a typical brick two-story building located in Gastown on the north side of a small park called 'Pigeon Square'.
Both the park and surrounding builds date back to the early years of Vancouver, B.C., which was originally, called 'Granville Town'.

It's located on the second floor and there is a faded reminder of the buildings past painted on the side of it, that says,"Saloon, beds 20 cents".

The mission is one of the oldest ones in Vancouver.
The date of it being turned into a mission is sketchy, but I have spoken to people who have been coming there since the 40’s.
The A.C.O.P. has had a mission in that area since 1920's.

DAYS OF OPERATION

In Operation Seven Days a Week.
Five of the nights are mission services, where we preach the gospel, worship in song and feed the hungry. We have four teams that do these nights who come from various different backgrounds.

We are always looking for more volunteers to help with these nights as well as new ideas to make use of our facility.

Summit Bible College, Abbotsford has been sending teams for years, both the leadership and the street people especially appreciate young people.
Youth groups like Full Gospel Church of Port McNeill's have come in past years and minister at the mission for a weekend and leave a lasting impression. T
heir energy helps encourage both the volunteers and the street people.

HOLIDAY MEALS

Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving Dinners

Christmas Eve Service & Dinner, has become a tradition at the mission. We serve a full course Christmas Dinner at 1:00pm on December 24th.

Easter Sunday Service & Dinner, is also served at 1:00pm and we serve over 100 people ham, mashed potatoes, vegetable and pie for desert.

Thanksgiving Sunday Service and Dinner. The dinner serves well over 100 people a full turkey dinner.

. "This ministry has grown only because of God given burdens."

We are always looking for hungry Christians, young or old, who are looking for a chance to serve.

DISCIPILESHIP

Carrall Street Church
The other two evenings are given to the Carrall Street Church, which consists of Sunday and Wednesday evenings.

We started this in 1998 for the purpose of discipleship and building stability in the street people.

Most street people go from mission to mission every day without calling one place home.

I met some that looked at the Gospel Mission as home, but weren’t growing.
So I (Barry Babcook) started the Bible Study on Thursday, without serving a meal, to see how hungry they were for God. We average between 12 to 20 members, many consistently come every week and are more interested in spiritual food than physical.

We teach more about being a Christian on these nights. We have continued to serve a meal on Sunday night, but the service is now an hour and a half and we serve communion on the first Sunday.

The mission has grown over these last years, and I believe it’s because of the increased stability in the core group.

FINANCIAL NEED

Our Greatest Need is for Financial Stability.
It costs approx. $120.00 a day to run the mission and most months we fall short of this. We end up depending on Christmas, other holiday seasons and periodic corporate donations to catch up. Over the summer we fall way behind.

If 10 -20 churches or individuals to committed to $50 - $100 of monthly support, we would meet our commitments.

This would allow us to use the extra money that comes in once or twice a year to do much-needed projects.

We would appreciate any prayer support that you or your organization could offer and if you would like to contribute to this need either financially or on a volunteer basis, please contact Rev. Barry Babcook at:
